Celebrating Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea – ʻĀina Back: Honoring Native Hawaiian Advocacy
July 19, 2023 @ 4:45 pm - 7:00 pm
July 19 – Doors open 4:45 PM (Limited Seats)
Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) was declared by the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1843 following the five-month occupation of the Kingdom by Great Britain. In 2022, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature passed House Bill 2475, which Governor David Ige signed into law as Act 82, establishing July 31 as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea.
Join us at Aliʻiōlani Hale as we examine the history of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and discuss civic engagement with Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea 2023 honoree, Dennis “Bumpy” Kanahele. Bumpy and other special guests will share moments of their advocacy for sovereignty, the Nation of Hawaiʻi’s vibrancy today, and legal efforts to acquire land in Waimānalo.
Moderated by Kainoa Daines (President, Friends of Judiciary History Center of Hawaiʻi)
